Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long is the course?

A: Each course lasts for 14 weeks. Each week you have a 3-hour session led by a professional Tutor

Q: I haven’t done any art since I left school, will I be able to cope?

A: Absolutely! Many of our students have little or no experience and the foundation course is structured so bottom-up tuition in each of the 4 mediums takes you from ground zero to competent – no one is left behind.

Q: I like doing landscapes mainly, can I concentrate on that?

A: While there is certainly room to draw or paint your subjects in your own style, it is important you follow the course curriculum as the techniques you learn will be applicable throughout your artistic life.  You can of course adapt everything you learn in your spare time, and the tutor loves to see what everyone has been up to during the week and give constructive criticism whether the subject was in the course or not

Q: I love the sound of the course but would like to try one or two lessons before committing, is this possible?

A: We would love to be able to offer you  that option, however as the class size is strictly limited and usually full, if someone were to join for a few weeks and then leave that would prevent another student enjoying the course.  Please look at some of our feedback – the classes are enjoyable and productive and excellent value for money

Q: What happens if I am sick  or can’t make one of the lessons?

A: Unfortunately life does throw up its challenges from time to time, but don’t worry, you course manager and tutor will know you are away and the lessons handouts can be sent on to you together with any tips the course manager thinks you might need in order for you to practice what we did at home.  Of course the tutor will try and give you some extra help when you come back too.  Plus this is a very friendly course and your fellow students will also be keen to let you know what we got up to (and probably show you their efforts!)

Q: What sort of things will I learn on the course?

A: Every course is slightly different, but in the main we have 4 modules: Drawing, Oil Pastels, Watercolour and Acrylic.  The subject matter varies each week – perhaps look at our Exhibition page to see the sorts of things our student have been doing previously

Q: I have some experience of painting with acrylics, but am keen to learn more; will this course be too basic for me?

A: More experienced students will probably join our returner groups, however if you have experience in one medium but not in another, you may wish to go in with the new starters for those modules.  Our course manager will be happy to discuss your options with you so please get in touch and we can go over your abilities and guide you from there.

Q: I don’t have any art materials, what will I need for the course?

A: Everything you need apart from paper and pencils is provided for you during the course.  You are welcome to use your own art supplies, the only thing we would strongly recommend is that you always use the right paper for the medium you are learning. (Most pieces are A3 in size). We do offer a Starter Pack with every sort of paper you might use during the course (plus spares, pencils rubber and sketchbook!) and we do usually have discounted supplies available in class if you need more to practice at home.  If you let us know what you have at home already we can happily advise you

Q: Will I have anything to show for it at the end of the course?

A: Of course! (pardon the pun…) You will have several good pieces of artwork you will be proud to show to friends and family – perhaps at the exhibition held at the end of every course – and certificates will be awarded to students during the exhibition. (We normally expect each student will want to display 3 or 4 pieces).  This is open to the public also, and you will get a chance to meet students from one of our other classes. Friends, family and other members of the public can also come along and see your work. (free of charge)

Q: 3 hours sounds like a long time, what if I can’t last the distance?

A: 3 hours of concentration is too long! However we have thought of that…. there is a 15 min break where you can stretch your legs, see what the other tables have been doing and have a cuppa on us to boost your energy.  However one word of warning; 3 hours will go so quickly you may try and dodge your tea break…the tutor will take a dim view of that! We all need a time out to stand back, switch off and look at things in a new light

Q: How much does this wonderful course cost?

A: We would be pleased to explain the very reasonable cost to you, together with an option to pay in instalments should you wish, but are not allowed to publish this information on the web.  However at around £9 per hour it is terrific value.
